چکیده
Elapid coral snakes of the Neotropics and Nearctic are highly venomous and frequently brightly coloured, with rings of red, yellow (or white), and black encircling the body (Roze 1996). Predators typically avoid tricolour ringed patterns (Brodie 1993; Brodie & Janzen 1995; Hinman et al. 1997; Pfennig et al. 2001; Harper & Pfennig 2007; Pfennig et al. 2007; Harper & Pfennig 2008; Kikuchi & Pfennig 2010), possibly without prior experience (Smith 1975, 1977). Numerous nonvenomous colubrid snakes of the Neotropics and Nearctic (e.g., kingsnakes and milk snakes) converge on similar tricolour ringed patterns, which has led many to suggest that these snakes are Batesian mimics of coral snakes (reviewed in Greene & McDiarmid 1981; Brodie & Brodie 2004).

Evolutionary biology: To mimicry and back again.
M any species that are dangerous or unpleasant to eat have evolved conspicuous signals that warn predators to avoid them. Not surprisingly, many other species that are edible to predators, from birds and butterflies to salamanders and sea slugs, have evolved to resemble these inedible species 1. By doing so, the 'mimics' receive protection from predation, just like their 'models'. This phenomen...
متن کاملExperimental studies of coral snake mimicry: do snakes mimic millipedes?
The prevalence of similarly ringed colour patterns in Neotropical snake species has stimulated heated controversy over the cause of this apparent convergence since it was first noted by Cope (1860) and Wallace (1870) in the last century. These ringed and banded species include venomous (neurotoxic) elapid coral snakes (Micrurus) and a number of mildly or non-venomous colubrid and anniliid snake...
متن کاملCoral snakes predict the evolution of mimicry across New World snakes
Batesian mimicry, in which harmless species (mimics) deter predators by deceitfully imitating the warning signals of noxious species (models), generates striking cases of phenotypic convergence that are classic examples of evolution by natural selection. However, mimicry of venomous coral snakes has remained controversial because of unresolved conflict between the predictions of mimicry theory ...
متن کاملCoral snake mimicry: does it occur?
Field observations and experimental evidence refute previous objections to the coral snake mimicry hypothesis. Concordant color pattern variation spanning hundreds of miles and several presumed venomous models strongly suggests that several harmless or mildly venomous colubrid snakes are indeed mimics of highly venomous elapids.
متن کاملDo aposematism and Batesian mimicry require bright colours? A test, using European viper markings.
Predator avoidance of noxious prey, aposematism and defensive mimicry are normally associated with bright, contrasting patterns and colours. However, noxious prey may be unable to evolve conspicuous coloration because of other selective constraints, such as the need to be inconspicuous to their own prey or to specialist predators. Many venomous snakes, particularly most vipers, display patterns...
